Joan Miller, Passionate Genealogist

This is the first of a series of guest posts by expert or experienced genealogists. Online Genealogy is a growing field and there are lots of great resources out there as well as some horrible resources that claim to have valuable information but you end up going around in circles trying to find something you can use.

I recently asked a few genealogists to comment on the following questions related to online genealogy research:

  • What do you think the future can bring with regards to online genealogy research?
  • What online tools do you use to research your genealogy and why?
  • What is your general opinion of the advantages and/or disadvantages of using some of these online research tools?
  • I was amazed by some of the answers I got back, and I can’t wait to share them with you! My first guest post is by Joan Miller, a passionate genealogist who enjoys sharing her research techniques with others through the use of genealogy social networking and interaction online. Who Do You Think You Are Lisa Kudrow? The Top 7 Jewish Genealogy Webistes

When I found out I’d be watching a whole hour of Lisa Kudrow on Who Do You Think You Are, I have to be honest, I was not looking forward to it.

Lisa Kudrow has never really been my favorite actor. Don’t get me wrong, I liked “Friends” and for a long time, I never missed an episode.

I don’t really know why I didn’t appreciate her acting, maybe it’s because people said I reminded them of Phoebe back then, the long hair, the long skirts and the forgetful, eccentric mannerisms, all I was missing was the guitar. I didn’t think I was anything like Phoebe so perhaps that’s why I didn’t like Lisa Kudrow’s acting!

But this episode made me appreciate Lisa Kudrow, the person, and I found her personality very endearing. In addition to all of this, I was entranced by the story, the tragedy, the unspeakable horrors of World War II, and the impact that those events still have on people today. I was moved by the connection of long lost family across the world. It was by far the best episode yet.

I hope these 7 websites help you research your Jewish Genealogy:

Who do You Think You Are Emmit Smith? The Top 6 African American Genealogy Resources Online

It seems like Emmitt Smith is still asking that question. I was very excited to find out about his genealogy because I know how hard it can be to trace African American ancestry. But I have to say that I was a bit disappointed in the lack of documentation available to trace his roots. So I did a bit of research to see if I could find free online genealogy resources for African American researchers.

These are the top 6 African American Genealogy Resources Online:

Who Do You Think You Are Sarah Jessica Parker?

Genealogy research can change everything about who you think you are! As I watched the opening credits, while they showed clips from the upcoming season, I found myself growing more and more excited for these people about to embark on the most intriguing adventure. They will be going back in time to discover who they are and where they came from, and understanding a little more about themselves.

I shared Sarah’s excitement when she sat down with her brother and talked about what she might find. Her journey started with a conversation with her mother, a good place to start for anyone looking for their ancestry. Her mom had a lot of pictures and names that gave Sarah a place to start, Cincinnati.
